If I was to mention the island of Puna to you I wonder if you would know where it is? Well it is part of Ecuador and at one time the only people that lived there was aboriginal people. Nowadays the local population is comprised of children, but very poor children with no shoes to wear and with very little by way of medication to take care of them when they fall ill, which they often do because of the many flies which carry diseases.
For many years God was not known in this community. When children are taught to drink alcohol, and use and sell drugs, they conform to the ways of the world, learning lifestyles far from Biblical teachings. Our director adds, Couples do not respect marriage or see it as a means to unite their families. These families continually struggle with loyalty to one another.
One man had a vision to see this community changed for good and his name is Pastor David. He applied for and received training by the Bible league, and now he is strongly committed to seeing the light break into the darkness which was all around.
Sunrise breaks through the darkness for good people. God's grace and mercy and justice (Psalm 112) The Message
As mentioned earlier, the people of Puna were not familiar with God's word and therefore of course Pastor Davids task was a difficult one. But he persevered and gradually he saw the sowing of God's Word beginning to take root in people's lives. Pastor David is still there today sowing the Word and encouraging people to work together in the service of Christ.
How wonderful it is now to see children who were once enslaved by alcohol and drugs studying God's Word. Many communities on the island are experiencing physical and spiritual cleanliness and families joining the local church are experiencing the joy of Christian Fellowship, most for the very first time.
Has the sowing of God's Word resulted in anything happening? Yes indeed it has, as four churches have now been planted and a further six are in the pipeline, and Jesus Christ is being made known throughout the island - 16069
