We are fast approaching the end of January and the point in the New Year when the majority of people's New Year's resolutions have already failed. This is, however, the time for renewed efforts to focus one's resources on achieving the desired goal. There are two keys to reaching your goals:

1. View your failures (i.e., I have not flossed in two days) as minor set backs and not as utter failure (i.e., I might as well start saving for dentures); and

2. Create a series of intermediate goals between where you are and where you want to be (i.e., instead of "I will lose 50 pounds this year" focus on "I will lose 1 pound each week").

These ideas do not only apply to personal goals, but to business goals as well. If you are trying to improve your medical collections in 2009, you should build upon these concepts. So, given these two points what is the best way to achieve a New Year's resolution of improving your medical billing? The best place to start is with the goal of getting your claims out the door clean. This is a great starting point because it does many wonderful things:

- It focuses you on the most critical aspect of billing. If the claims go out the door clean you will find that all of the rest of the challenges start to become much more manageable;

- It allows you to focus on achievable, smaller goals (85% of claims go out clean in January, 87% go out clean in February, etc);

- This goal has many ways in which failure provides powerful learning opportunities. You can set aside time to analyze rejected claims to determine the source of the rejection and then focus on eliminating the problem area.

- There are many tools available to help you achieve this goal. They include claims scrubbers, coding tools, training seminars and insurance verification tools.

What does all of this mean? It means this is the time for a renewed focus on your medical billing business goals. It is time to:

- Determine where you stand today (what percentage of your claims get paid on the first submission);

- Decide upon a stretch target (I will increase my clean claim percentage by 15 points this year);

- Create a "goal ladder" where each rung of the ladder represents an incremental, achievable goal on the way toward your ultimate goal. For instance your may set incremental goals of improving your clean claim performance by 1 percent each month; and

- Adopt the mentality that you will learn from your mistakes.

The Short Cut To Success

There's one common theme that shows up over and over in emails, blog posts, Ask campaigns and phone calls. Year after year, it's always the same. But I don't think I ever realized the extent of what you were asking for, until now. Do you know what I'm talking about?

You want a short cut, not just a process, but a short cut for the system, a short cut for the program, the Cliff notes of the book, you want the magic pill.

Poof, it's done.

Actually, now that I'm writing this I can think of a couple Internet marketing things I'd like that magic pill for myself, but I've never found one and I don't believe it really exists.

I'm not saying it's an inherently bad thing to want it boiled down to the barest of effort, to almost eliminate the learning curve. I know it's not that you're lazy. I get that you're totally and frustratingly overwhelmed. There's way too much information and too many offers and too many programs that say you can't live without this new and improved tool that will instantly transform your business.

In very few instances that may be true.

But it's not always possible. Most of the time there is some level of work on your part and a learning curve involved. How much time, money and effort will vary depending on what you're doing and also to a certain extent what level of success you choose to achieve.

You do consciously or sub-consciously choose your level of success by choosing your level of commitment and the level of education you decide to buy. Yes, I said buy, because most high level education that leads to lasting success is something you buy. From a $7 report to a $100,000 a year mentoring program. You choose.

I understand your financial ability plays a role in what you buy, but you need to understand that your financial situation will rarely shift on it's own without you taking a leap of faith and possibly putting something on a credit card, or a few credit cards. In the first 2 years I was learning this business I built up quite a library of resource that helped me grow and I was initially putting out a lot more money than I was taking in. I took a leap of faith. Without doing that I don't believe I would be where I am today.

Most people need more to be successful than just one quick fix and thats what Ive been thinking about the last few days. Ive been asking myself how can I put together all the different pieces I teach into a cohesive package that delivers exactly what you need.

So I've laid all the piece out here for you. If you think there's one you need right now grab it and run with it.

There are 4 areas that will help you build your business and also allow you to live the life of your dreams. It's a process and you need to cover all four areas to sustain the success you build.

1. Introspection: Who are you? What do you want in your life? What will make you change?

2. Out-Picturing: What is your passion? How are you going to design and create the life of your dreams? What will the business be that funds all this?

3. Sales and Communication Skills: How are you going to speak to your target market about what you've created? What kind of branding,marketing materials, sales copy, talks, presentations are you going to create to bring in new clients? What is going to be the foundation of how you speak your business in the world? How will you learn to effectively communicate with your clients?

4. Putting It All Together and Growing: Where will you get the tools, strategies,and training to continuously take your business and your life to the next level?

Listening to news reports and reading articles, you will know that you are in a tough job market and that you will have to do something to make yourself stand out from the rest of the crowd.

The question is, "How can you make yourself stand out when there are so many other candidates looking at the same job?" You realize that you are competing against the odds.

The answer is to "BRAND YOURSELF."

This means that you have to discover WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE.

Here is the status. You have an outstanding resume and that you made it to the top of the stack of resumes of people to be called for an interview. You, and maybe nine or ten other equally qualified people for the position, that is.

Companies have many candidates to choose from and they are interviewing more people so that they can select the "best." When you are lucky enough to be invited to a job interview, it is essential that you be ready to sell yourself - to let the interviewer know what makes you unique " what makes you a "remembered" person -- what added value you can bring to the position"in other words, why you are the best person for the job? Your goal is to leave behind an impression of your "brand."

The first step in finding your uniqueness is to identify your five areas of strength. These strengths are the areas where you do very well. This will take some work and some thought on your part. By doing some basic preparation, you can determine your uniqueness and where you should focus your attention.

"What is your area of expertise?"

"What are your strengths?"

"What is your work ethic?"

"What would your co-workers or former bosses say about you?"

Think about previous performance appraisals " what was said/written about you?

In order to help you through this process here is Branding Exercise that will help you get started.

Use whatever works best for you to do this exercise " paper/pencil, spreadsheet, word document " the point is to get it down in writing. ("Winging" it does not work when interviewing in this environment)

First, write your education, training, certifications and years of experience.

List degrees, special training, certifications, overall years of experience, years in a particular type of position or specialty .

Next, what is your area of expertise? What do you know a great deal about?

"My expertise is in in my capacity I handle all I have worked on $..projects, deals.I am fluent in ..broad range of experiences in .including analyzing evaluating .I am knowledgeable about . I use this knowledge to I also have a strong sense .."

Third, what are your strengths?

These skills can be viewed as transferable" you can take them with you to any job you hold.

This is how you excel in being the type of person or employee who has what it takes to get the job done. These skills are sometimes referred to as the "soft skills" " but there is nothing soft about these skills when it comes to putting your "brand" together. You want a good clear image of yourself - the whole picture.

Examples of these skills are your communication and people skills, or your time-management and project-management skills, or your ability to build strong relationships or your ability to influence others.

Fourth, what does your past say about you?

This is a good place to think about your work ethic, loyalty, integrity, and overall disposition in the office. Do you get along well with most coworkers? Think about previous performance appraisals " what was said or written about you? What would your co-workers or ex-bosses say about you?

Lastly, think of the personal traits that make you unique.

Maybe you never miss deadlines, or perhaps you are willing to do above and beyond what is asked, or perhaps you have a great attitude. Sometimes letting the interviewer know that you have a great sense of humor that helps lighten the environment " especially during tense situations is appropriate. All these things make you the person that you are " a unique "brand" of a person. (Don't dismiss these traits--many people have been fired for negative personal traits rather than for lack of knowledge).

This is where you "brand" yourself into a product that is better than the others; someone who leaves an impression behind. When you have identified your five unique areas, try your hand at writing yourself a "commercial" or statement about yourself, incorporating this information into your statement.

What is the impression you want to leave behind? The guy who wore the funny looking tie? Or the woman who is known for her organizational skill and her ability to come in and bring order to chaos?

In summary, by narrowing your uniqueness " by branding yourself into these five basic points you can guide the conversation to include this information. By focusing on five areas of strength, you will become more focused and feel more confident and in turn become more "remembered. - 16069

The three main types of scams that we are going to talk about is envelope stuffing, home assembly and chain letters or emails.

Envelope stuffing sounds so great. I remember when I was younger I got a letter that said they would pay me one dollar for every envelope I stuffed. I was so excited, send them to me and I will load you up. The offer was that they would send me 300 envelopes and letters, all I had to do was fill them and mail them. I couldn't wait. A week went buy and finally my 300 envelopes came. What a rip. They sent me 300 envelopes and 300 copies of the sales letter I had just received. The way it worked was I was to place an ad in the newspaper and require people to send me a dollar for postage for their free information. The information was the sales letter I got, and then if they were dumb enough to fall for it the company I paid was going to rake in $20 for the package.

Home assembly works the same way. I tried to do this too. I ordered a package for $20 for this duck light switch cover craft assembly. I paid about twenty dollars for it also. They sent all the supplies to make the switch covers, and they were going to pay me $3 for each one I made. The stupid assembly instructions were so complex that it took me 3 hours to make one that sucked, plus I still had to paint it, then get it to pass their quality control examination. Basically I could make about twenty bucks per day if I worked 24/7 and made these flawlessly. I gave up after I spent an hour sawing out the first one.

Chain Letters, I never fell for these, but they are scams. Anything you get that says to add your name to the list and then redistribute the information is a scam. Very few people will follow up on this and actually do it. Most will just remove your name, add theirs and then mail out the letters. You get no money, your name is gone and the other person probably gets no money either. They try to curb this by saying it doesn't work if you don't mail a dollar to everyone above you, but I can tell you it doesn't work then either.
